Visit an inspiring skills development school, working with young people from this marginalised community
Set amidst the lush green vistas of Sri Lanka’s Central Province lies this incredible skills development school. It is here you will be met by conscientious staff, (who are all former students) who will guide you through your visit. Your visit will start with a tour of the school, including understanding the history of the tea plantation industry in Sri Lanka and how the communities that pick tea for this refreshing drink actually live. After the school tour, the staff team of the school will sit with you over tea for a chat about how the school makes a real difference to the lives of the young people from the tea estates.
This is a unique experience which will enable you to understand why the school is so important to the area. After tea in the staff room, you will have the opportunity to directly affect the students' learning in a positive way by having an informal discussion with them in English.
After the school experience, you will have the opportunity to venture into the surrounding area to learn the craft of picking tea leaves. After you have learnt this delicate process, take the 40 minutes, easy walk around the plantation to discover stunning views of the reservoir and beyond, all the way up to the famous Adam’s Peak in the distance. During this walk you will learn the history and significance of the Buddhist pilgrimage site as well as the town of Maskeliya, including the flooded temple in the reservoir.
